Welcome and warm-ups
3 minutes
Review Syncopation: Have students stand in a circle. I will clap a rhythm. If the rhythm is even they need to stay standing, if the rhythm is uneven, the will sit down. If they get it wrong, they will remain sitting. The last person standing is our “syncopation expert” for the day.
5 minutes
Play “Push Boat Song”. Have students listen, pick a movement (sailing or work movement) and practice moving to the song. Moving to syncopation: Watch “Joyful, Joyful” YouTube video to give an idea of movement and spirituals.
10 minutes
Group work: Students will divide into groups and start work on creating their own spiritual.
Melissa will guide one group and I will guide the other. Help students notate their 8 measures and get them thinking about possible lyrics. Students can start thinking of movement and planning their performance for next class period.
